The Ministry of Public Health of Chaco reports that a non-indigenous suspected case of the Chikungunya fever virus was registered. She is a woman from the town of General Vedia with a history of recent travel to Asunción, Paraguay.

The surveillance system of the Epidemiology Directorate of the Ministry of Public Health revealed the existence of a suspected case of infection by the Chikungunya virus that affects a 34-year-old person from the town of General Vedia. The patient consulted on January 24 due to fever, rash, and joint pain, with a history of a confirmed case of this virus in a close relative in the neighboring country.

From this, the corresponding samples were requested for diagnosis of the disease and the focus blocking protocol was activated. So far, no other cases of the Chikungunya virus have been registered in relation to the suspected imported case.

Due to the increase in the number of cases of Chikungunya fever in Paraguay, an alert was issued in the Argentine Northeast region. For this reason, everyone who undertakes a trip to areas where there is currently circulation of this virus is reminded to take extreme preventive measures against the bites of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

It is suggested to use repellents with DEET (concentrations between 25% to 35%) and repeat the application from time to time depending on the concentration, as well as eliminating unused containers that can accumulate water.

If a person who traveled to these areas presents upon their return to Argentina (and up to 2 weeks later) fever accompanied by headache, drowsiness, muscle or joint pain, pain behind the eyes, rash and/or bleeding gums , it is essential to activate the suspicion for arboviruses (dengue, zika and chikungunya) taking the following measures: approach a health center as soon as possible to carry out the corresponding evaluation.

The population is requested not to self-medicate (some anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or aspirin can aggravate the clinical picture), use personal protection measures such as repellents, physical barriers such as mosquito nets on doors and windows, and isolation measures inside the home to avoid contagion. to other people.
